Projected formed as a four-piece band, with John Connolly and Vinnie Hornsby from Sevendust, Scott Phillips from Alter Bridge and Creed, and Eric Friedman from Submersed and Tremonti. The members had prior connections: Creed toured with Sevendust, and Phillips played drums on Submersed's first album, while Mark Tremonti produced that album and later worked with Friedman on his solo project. The band recorded their debut album, Human, in early June 2012 and released it on September 18, 2012. Connolly expressed interest in touring but noted scheduling conflicts with members' other bands, and the group returned to their respective projects without any live shows.
